This year I have completed a few productions, and have learned a lot about how the day goes, and how to improve the production process for the future, as well as different shots and styles. The first improvement that comes to mind is using the stabilisers for footage. The footage compared to hand help look tenfolds better, as well as tripod shots, or gentle movements when handheld. I think that if you limit handheld shots to small movements and directions looks great, but too much can give the movie/shots a student feel, and when you pair these shots with still shots from tripods and stabilisers, the shots look a lot better. I have also learned about the importance of lighting. Lighting can improve a scene incredibly well. It can give shots new dimensions, with shadow play, as well as making rooms larger or smaller using different amounts of light, and using props. Another tactic that I have been using is having alternative shot ideas. Ideas are seen differently when they are in your head, and so listening to your peers for their shot ideas, and shooting both is very helpful. When editing, sometimes the shots that you thought would work, don't, so having alternative storylines is very helpful. Keeping the day short and concise, with little downtime is also a major thing that I will implement in all productions I carry on with. Waiting around, or not 100% knowing what you are doing on a shoot can be frustrating and tiring, so sticking to the day plan is very important.
