Documentary Production

Writer: Miles StewartMiles Stewart

For the final submission of year 1 media, we had to produce a documentary around the subject of communities. The community that I based the documentary on was my own community and group, Ravin' Gavin. I wanted to documentary to be a starting point for Ravin' Gavin, and so I based it around the concept of what Ravin' Gavin is, and what we plan to achieve in the future. I researched documentaries such as 'Bowling for Columbine' by Michael Moore, as well as Youtube documentaries such as 'Full Force' by IdubbzTV and 'The Mind of Jake Paul' by Shane Dawson, seeing as my own documentary would be a Youtube documentary. From the documentaries, combined with my prior knowledge of documentary genres and types, I wanted to create different segments in my documentary, to showcase documentaries as a whole. These segments include expository mode documentary work, where it is b-roll footage, with a voice of god narration over the top. Poetic mode documentary work, that includes arty footage, with music behind it, to create feelings. The last definite segment I wanted was an interview part of the documentary, because that is very common in all documentaries.

1st Part- My documentary starts off in the expository mode, using b-roll footage, with a voice of god narration over the top. The b-roll was shot myself, and was meant to just act as filler. The shots couldn't be too complex as I have limited equipment, and crew, so good shots of nature was the best I could do, with small clips of myself, that I shot using a tripod. The start was meant to get the audience interested, which was the reasoning behind the range of shots.

2nd Part- I then produced an animation in the expository mode, as it also has a voice of god narration over the top. The animation was created using after effects, of which I had to learn a lot of tips and tricks including camera movement. This part of the documentary was meant to be informative, and give the audience the background and history behind Ravin' Gavin.

3rd Part- The third part was the interviews. I got all of the members of Ravin' Gavin including myself to answer a few questions and film themselves. Most of the responses were natural, and everyone came up with their ideas, but we did script a couple of the jokes. This part of the documentary was meant to give profiles to the members of Ravin' Gavin, and show to the audience that we are based around comedy.

4th Part- The 4th part of the documentary was a montage I created from old footage I recorded in the summer of 2019. This part was meant to showcase the Youtube side of Ravin' Gavin, and showcase my editing and videography. It also shows the types of activities we do. This part of the documentary was poetic mode, and was meant to establish feelings from the audience. A break from information, and 1 minute for the audience to relax.

5th Part- The final part of the documentary, resorted back to the same style of the 1st part, in a round-robin style, to wrap up the documentary. This part was meant to finalize the video, as well as make sure that the audience know that there is more to come from Ravin' Gavin. The clips for this section was the same as the 1st section, but done in the evening, to showcase the end of the video. I wanted more shots of myself to be in the last part of the video, so that the audience know it was me who created it, so they feel closer to the movie maker.
