Horror Script Reading

To get a better idea on what our horror scripts should or perhaps shouldn't look like, we all read through various horror scripts on simplyscripts.com.

The first script that I read was called 'Allured' and it was about a soldier named Franz that had lost his platoon. He stumbled across a castle and was let in by the servant, Friedrich. He is led to his room, and multiple times is disturbed by haunted noises and a ghostly girl in his bed. He confronts Friedrich but he concludes that he must have been dreaming. On Franz's way back to his room, he stumbles across what he perceives to be 4 ghosts dining. The 'ghosts' want Franz to come to them, Franz gets scared and runs. One of the diners asks what that was about, and another exclaims that was the ghost of the castle that returns every year, revealing Franz as the ghost. Overall the script was decently written, but the story itself is very dull. The horror aspects of hearing scuttling and a ghost girl in his bed would usually be scary but with events happening suddenly with no build up and no consequences after the events ended, the reader wasn't startled. The ending, although making sense, wasn't scary at all. The use of characters in the script were rather poor, with both Franz and Friedrich both being overly polite and apolagetic. The 'ghostly' diners also did not give the intent of threat to the reader either, and so overall as a horror it was weak, but perhaps with different techniques used, could perhaps be an alright horror movie.

The second script I read was called 'All-Mart', and it was set in a Wallmart-esque shop. The script was based around a child's horror experience in a wallmart-esque shop. The child gets separated from his mum, and whilst trying to locate her, has interactions with different shoppers and staff. Each of the shoppers and staff members were seen and described as horror characters by the child, but after the child runs away from them, the script tells the audience that they are not scary and that they are normal people. The child is finally reuinted with his mum and they leave. The horror itself was pretty weak, but I give it a better score than Allured, because the script gives for better imagery, and I can imagine the movie being scarier when adjusted into a movie format, and especially with a scary ending or twist at the end, for a longer plot.

The last script I read was about a mute boy, who lived with his horrible family. This script was called 'Father Krinkle'. The boy lived with his Harry Potter inspired family, where the parents hated the mute boy and made him do chores, but loved the boys older brother. The script is set at Christmas, and it is made known to the audience that the mute boy wouldn't be getting anything for Christmas, as his older brother unwraps some presents on Christmas eve. When the mute boy goes to bed, he is visited by Father Krinkle, a dark santa figure who gives him a present and leaves. The next day the brother gets loads of toys, and they find out the mute boy has a toy, and they take it from him and give it to the brother. After lunch the mute boy is made to do the dishes and then they unwrap the present from Father Krinkle. It is a game called 'what am I'? The family play it, and the dad goes first. The dad gets given a card with a teddy bear on, and the family has to guess it. He gives hints, and the mute boy exclaims 'teddy bear'! The father then suddenly turns into a stuffed teddy bear. The family are petrified except for the mute boy who is happy. The family try to move but they are stuck to their seats. They know something is wrong, and magicly they are forced to keep on playing. The mother gets books, and when the mute boy guesses books, she turns into a pile of books, the older brother goes after and turns into a puppy. The mute boy then plays with his new presents. This script was the best out of the three, and I can definately create strong imagery from the script and can see this as a horror movie. I will definately be taking tips from this reading.
