Framing Techniques

Writer: Miles StewartMiles Stewart

Framing- This was a quick lesson but we learned about the most popular framing techniques, and what makes them aesthetically pleasing. The rule of thirds refers to capturing images in thirds, either horizontally or vertically. This technique refers to having the subject in the middle with equal distance either side of the subject, or the subject being on the side. This is the most popular technique and it is something that I have definitely been using whilst for photography beforehand, but that is because of how pleasing it makes the images. Other techniques include using symmetry, changing the foreground and background depth, using frames within frames, leading lines and patterns. All of these techniques can be used in all sorts of scenarios, to compose different feelings and the give visuals different meanings. This was definitely a creative eye-opener, as it allowed me to realise just how in depth photography can go into, to create the perfect visual. I have used a lot of different techniques for the studio practice, but the techniques used most often are the rule of thirds, leading lines and symmetry.
