Simple effects and overlays can have a huge effect on video or photo footage. For music videos, the different effects and overlays used can have massive effects on how the audience reacts to the footage, as well as how the footage conducts itself to both the genre of music and the feel of the music video. All music videos have different styles, genres, stories and scenes, of which different effects, simple or complex can change and alter the feel massively. Raw footage can be colourized, cropped, edited and effects put on top of it to massively change the aesthetic. I have talked about colourizing, overlaying and basic editing in previous blog posts, but I haven't talked much about effects that you can overlay onto footage.
Already pre-built into Premier Pro, are many different presets for effects. I have also installed Twitch, of which offers lots of new free effects as well. Effects can quickly change the aesthetic of the footage, to match the mood or genre of music video. The most popular effects used in music videos include VHS tape edits, static, black and white, use of LUTSs, optical flares and light effects, water/smoke and fire transitions and other smooth transitions, neon paint effects and many more. To showcase some of the effects within Premier Pro and the Twitch plugin, I have edited a 2 minute short that I created for a separate video. This is the original video;
Now I cut the video between the different clips and applied different pre-installed effects, overlays and twitch effects onto the footage or an adjustment layer. Some of the different effects include Bad Distortion, which could be used for rap videos, Bad film Gate, for flashbacks and memories, Blinking, Blue Glow, Chaos Theory, for rock/rap and hip hop videos. I also used Colorless Flash, Diagonal Slide, Fashion Show, Night Club, Random Zoom, Time Jitters, Black and White and other Colour Gradient overlays, Different Blooms. There were many other effects, but most of them are relatively similar, such as different colour flashes and screen shakes, of which can be used for different music video genres. The effects are very easy to install, and I will definitely be doing more experiments with basic effects, as well as looking into more complex effects that you create in After Effects. Here is the edited version of the clip, with effects;
