Image Stabilisation

Updated: Nov 16, 2020

Today I learned a very nifty trick that can easily be done within adobe premier pro, that can make work look a lot more professional if done correctly and with a subtle touch. This effect is is image stabilization withing premier pro. This effect can be easily applied to footage by searching up 'stabilization' in the effects column in premier pro and dragging the effect onto a clip on the work timeline. Sometimes this can take a while to analyse, and this can be shortened by applying stabilization to an already pretty stabilized clip. This means that there is less analyzing that premier pro need to do, so it can do it quicker.

Once stabilized, the clip is supposed to have less shake, and a more clear path throughout the clip. Stabilization is best used on clips that have a clear pathing, such as from left to right or up to down. Any more complex pathing and the stabilization can sometimes be very jittery, or contain too much black or adobe crated border.

The way that image stabilization works, is adobe tries to create a center point, and rotates the footage constantly, so throughout the clip, the image is level. This can lead to the footage being scaled in a bit, so that the border isn't shown, because as it is being leveled, sometimes the border is shown, and unless changed, the border is black. If you want to scale to not changed, and don't like the adobe created black borders, there is a button that makes adobe try to create the rest of the image, but it can sometimes look a but blurry or fake.

On simple clips, image stabilization can take a great shot to a professional standard shot. It makes shots that were perhaps taken hand help, look like they are on a tripod, or robotic arm, so if used correctly, this tool can be very effective. Below are the 2 same clips, with the latter clip being warp stabilized.
