Basic Subtitle Editing

Today we learned about adding basic subtitles to projects. You can simply add text to both after effects and premier pro files, but you have a lot more control and creativity in after effects. If you want to apply subtitles to a premier pro file, the best way to do it is to make a new layer in premier pro, add text and then open the layer with after effects. This allows you to edit this text layer, and once complete, the layer will be brought back into premier pro.

Adding subtitles is very simple, use the text tool and choose the area you want to work within, alter the text by highlighting it, allowing you to change the font, size, spacing, lettering, colour including fill colour and stroke and much more using the drop down window < text pallet. To place the text at the correct time within the video, you can alter the amount of time the text is on the timeline for. Drag the start and finish to the correct times.

You can now alter positioning as well as effects to the text. You can change the positioning by pressing on the positioning key frame, and moving the timeline forward, and then moving the text to the next location. For applying effects, the best method to get the drop down menu is to use window < workspace < effects, and this should add an effects panel on your screen. The effects all change how the text looks or acts, such as fading in/out at certain times, moving in a particular manner, changing colour or transforming. Apply an effect by dragging the desired effect onto the text, and play around with it using by selecting the text and altering the data on the left panel within after effects. Here is an example of a quick lyric video we messed around on to play around with applying subtitles to a music video.
